Part 5/5 - 5 Ways to Boost Holiday Sales for your Site - Offer E-Certificates + Bonus Tip!

In this article, we’ll go over the final easy and sometimes overlooked way to boost your holiday revenue on your website- Offering E-Certifcates plus Bonus Tip!

Part 2 - Make Your Site Easy-To-Use
Part 3 - Remind Your Customers
Part 4 - Create Fun, Interactive Tools

[Overview of past articles] The 2012 holiday shopping season could be the best in years for retailers, and according to Deloitte, a 15-17% increase is forecasted for non-store sales.  That could be you!

Even retail giants like Target, has announced they’re doing price matching this season that extends to online competitors such as Amazon, Walmart, BestBuy and more. Your business most likely won’t be affected by this, but it goes to show that even retail stores have been recognizing the increasing online shopping habits of savvy customers.

So how can you start taking advantage of the sales increase?

Today, we’ll go over the final easy and sometimes overlooked ways to boost your holiday revenue:

5. Offer E-Certificats or E-Gift Cards

I know I mentioned in Part 1 that gift cards are considered gifts without thought, however, e-certificates are almost instant, which caters to the last-minute shopper, as well as providing an easy solution for the him/her (aka don’t make me think! as discussed in Part 3).

This is one of the simplest year-round offerings that you can showcase on your site, and can be themed for any occasion.

For example, Books-A-Million gives options for tangible gift cards along with quicker turnaround E-Gift Certificates.

Here's another example: "Give the Gift of Dell"

Dell provides multiple options but we’ll focus on E-Gift Cards that allows for direct send to the recipients inbox or print-at-home.

Custom Dell Cards

Here, you can see that you can choose different Dell branded cards/certificates to send or print. Personalization is easy with “Add Your Message” and allows for customers who just want to buy a card/certificate without spending time perusing your extensive product line.

The e-certificate itself shouldn't just be an email with a code either. Your customer is relying on you to make this virtual package pretty, so if they look good to the recipient, you look good to the buyer and that’s a win-win situation for everyone, especially when that can solidify future sales.

Bonus Tip! Offer Free or Discounted Shipping

How many times have you, yourself, added items to the shopping cart, went through the registration process, only to end up closing the browser upon learning the shipping price that the site didn't disclose until the very last minute? I have. Many times.

To avoid last minute shopping cart abandonment, disclose the shipping price on the homepage and if possible, provide free shipping for the holidays to be more attractive than your competitors.

Here's an example from Crutchfield, where they clearly display free shipping on the homepage.

Your free shipping can be tied to a minimum purchase (i.e. Spend $25 and get free shipping!) if the thought of free shipping with every order doesn't mesh well with your business goals.

Here, Overstock.com highlights on the homepage as well as every inner page, their deeply discounted shipping.

Overstock example of cheap shipping

Your customers will more likely buy from you if they don't feel like they're getting gouged with shipping rates. A high shipping rate, coupled with tax, can be enough to turn the customer away so it’d be beneficial to your business if there are shipping promos during this holiday spending season to make your site an easier choice.
