How to Create a YouTube Account for Your Small Business

    This Walkthrough will show you the steps in creating your own YouTube account for your Small Business in addition to some beginner tips.
  • 1. Visit the YouTube homepage, and click Sign In on the upper right. You’ll see a log in area for a Google account, or for New Users.

    If you have a Google account for business, it’s recommended to tie the business YouTube channel together with it.

    If you don’t have a Google account for business, select “Create an Account” in the upper right, and fill in the required information.

    It’s recommended you use "" as this will double up as your Google+ account should you create one.

  • 2. You’ll be asked to add a Profile Photo in this step to start building your Google profile. Use a business logo, or any image that best represents your brand/business.
    Your photo will be displayed at 250x250 pixels but you can upload a larger image if you’d like. Be sure to keep it in square format so that the image doesn’t get automatically dropped.

    You can also skip this step if you want to add it later.
  • 3. You’ll be prompted to return back to YouTube after you uploaded a Profile Photo or skipped previous step.
  • 4. Upon getting redirected, a pop up box will ask if you want to connect your Facebook or Twitter accounts.
    This step isn’t necessary but you can choose to connect them if you want.

  • 5. The next step asks you to select Categories you’re interested in so YouTube can recommend Channels.
    You’re free to skip this step as well.
  • 6. Whether you picked categories or not, YouTube will automatically choose some Channels. You can either save the choices, or uncheck Channels that you don’t want. Then Save.
  • 7. You’ll be taken to the YouTube feed of videos to browse but let’s continue setting up your YouTube account by clicking the upper right to drop down additional options.

  • 8. Here, you’ll be able to edit your YouTube name so you don’t use your Full Name.
    Click “Create a username” under the button to set a name a username for your business.

  • 9. After you create a Username, you’ll be taken to the homepage of your Channel. Select "Channel Settings" so we can start adding images and information.

  • 10. Here you’ll be able to upload an Avatar and Background to customize your channel. Please note the YouTube Avatar suggested dimensions are 800x800 pixels with max file size at 1 MB.
    If you want to upload a background later, you can choose to change the color here, see the preview and move on.

  • 11. The 2nd tab to edit is "Info and Settings." You can properly format your Channel title here to add spaces etc, since it automatically places your username in this field.
    Add a Description for what your business and channel is about. Remember to use keywords you want associated with your business.

    Then, add Tags, to further strengthen the keywords as it will help show up in searches.

  • 12. The 3rd section is “Tabs,” where you can select the default tab that visitors land on whenever they come to the Channel.
    The best option is the “Featured Tab” as you’ll later be able to select what videos are to be your “Featured” videos (ie. an introduction video).

    If you select “Featured Tab” be sure to checkmark "Featured", and select the layout desired. When finished, select “Done Editing” at the upper right.

  • 13. You can add more pertinent information by clicking “Edit” on your Channel Homepage.

    You’ll see the "Description" you had previous entered in this section and you can make changes if you’d like.

    You’ll also be able to add multiple links in the 2nd section. Choose a "Title" and then enter the URL of your choice.

    Your official website is suggested as the first option, and you can continue adding related websites and/or social media account URLs.

    Add your "City", and then click "Apply" to save changes.
  • 14. Now that your profile and Channel is set up, it’s time to upload your first video! Click “Upload” on the top of the page.

    By clicking the arrow, you’ll be prompted to find your video on your computer.
  • 15. Here are some initial Video Tips to get you started if you don’t have a video yet:
    YouTube supports well-known formats including:
    • WebM files - Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codecs
    • .MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files - Typically supporting h264, mpeg4 video codecs, and AAC audio codec
    • .AVI - Many cameras output this format - typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM
    • .MPEGPS - Typically supporting MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio
    • .WMV
    • .FLV - Adobe-FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio
